Amy is principal flute of the London Symphony Orchestra, having previously held the same position with the Hallé and Royal Northern Sinfonia. She has also appeared as guest principal flute with many other orchestras in the UK including the Philharmonia, Academy of St Martin in the Fields and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Alongside performing, teaching is an important part of her career.

Amy has given classes at the Royal Academy of Music, Durham University and Chethams School of Music as well as working with the young musicians of the National Youth Orchestra and the NYO Inspire programme. She completed her MA at the Royal Academy of Music where she graduated with distinction, winning a DipRAM award
and several prizes including the Patron’s Award, Woodwind Finalists’ Prize and the HRH Duchess of Gloucester Prize. Whilst at the Academy she studied with Michael Cox and Karen Jones as well as piccolo with Pat Morris. Prior to this Amy studied for her undergraduate with Laura Jellicoe at the Royal Northern College of Music, where she has recently become an Associate Member.

*How do you cope with being on the road, or the time between?
I love having an excuse to be a coffee shop tourist wherever we travel.

What ignited the Chamber Music spark for you?
As a teenager at Bromley Youth Music Trust, I was very lucky to have the opportunity to play in many wind quintets, trios and quartets. It felt really freeing to learn to play repertoire together with friends without a conductor for the first time and find our own way. There were so many keen flautists we even had a massed flute choir call 40 Flutes but I’m not sure that qualifies as chamber music any more!

* What do you keep in your gig bag?

Plenty of biscuits!
Noise cancelling headphones for some calm, or last minute listening.
Hopefully my flute.

* Drive/motivation/what keeps you wanting to play music?

For me it’s all about the communication and getting to share great music with great people. It’s such a privilege to be a musician professionally and have the time to listen and learn from inspiring colleagues everyday.
