We travel North to explore both the art and the folk music of Scandinavia. The evocative strains of the hardanger fiddle, in the hands of Finnish violinist Sini Simonen and a selection of Danish String Quartet arrangements of their native folk music sit alongside lesser-known works from the classical tradition, in this night under the Northern Lights.

Weber was renowned for his mastery of German Romantic Opera, and the clarinettist certainly gets to play the diva in his ebullient quintet. Ravel’s enchanting set of fairy tales sets the scene.

Schubert’s ever-fresh ‘Trout’ Quintet has been delighting audiences for over two hundred years. We make the most of the double bass addition to our line-up by opening with Rossini’s witty duo, showcasing the virtuosity of this ‘Cinderella’ instrument of the orchestra, whilst the Goulds continue their ~Schumann survey.

An eclectic programme of evocative music from Hungary, featuring that country’s quintessential instrument, the cimbalom. Savour the piquant musical paprika of this laid-back concert, with café-style seating.

The sound of the cimbalom brings extra Eastern -European spice to our closing concert. Hungarian composer György Kurtág celebrated his 100th birthday earlier this year and his Are Pezzi are typical of his evocative work. But even Frenchman Debussyfell for the instrument’s quirky charm! After the Goulds complete their survey ofSchumann’s piano trios , Tchaikovsky sends us away bathed in Tuscan sunshine.
